Rick Tocchet’s Philadelphia Flyers will face the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night at Ball Arena. The game is scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on NBCSP.

This is the second and final matchup between the two teams for the 2025-26 season. In their previous meeting on December 7, Colorado secured a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia at Xfinity Mobile Arena. During that game, Colorado managed to withstand a strong third-period effort from the Flyers, including a penalty shot by Trevor Zegras. Brent Burns, Brock Nelson (on the power play), and Valeri Nichushkin scored for Colorado, while Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny found the net for Philadelphia.

The Flyers come into this game with a 1-0-1 record during their current western road trip. They opened with a 2-1 win against Vegas, where Konecny scored both goals. However, in their next outing against Utah, Philadelphia lost 5-4 in overtime after holding leads of 3-0 and 4-2 during regulation.

Colorado has been dominant at home this season with a record of 20 wins, one loss, and four overtime losses at Ball Arena. In their last ten games overall, they have five wins, three losses, and two overtime or shootout losses. Most recently, they were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks in a shootout.

Reflecting on recent performances, there is an emphasis within the Flyers organization to move past Monday’s overtime loss in Utah. “The circumstances of Monday’s OT loss in Utah were a very bitter pill for the entire Flyers team to swallow,” according to commentary from within the team. “It’s easier said than done to focus on the overall process and execution of the game’s first 50 minutes. Human nature is to dwell on errors of commission and omission that proved fatal in the end.”

“Nevertheless, this is exactly what the Flyers must do on Friday,” it continued. “Four nights ago, the Flyers found a way — it wasn’t pretty or flawless — to end the Vegas Golden Knights’ seven-game winning streak and halt their own six-game winless stretch. The same resolve is needed against the Avalanche, except perhaps on an even higher scale.”

Leadership from veteran players such as captain Sean Couturier remains important as well: “At times such as these, teams need their veteran leaders to (as Flyers Hall of Famer Joe Watson is fond of saying) know the way, go the way and show the way for the club.” The statement adds: “That starts with team captain Sean Couturier and extends through other veterans on the team — Konency, Travis Sanheim, etc.”

Couturier currently faces a goal drought spanning 23 games since his last goal against Colorado in December but has contributed eight assists during that period. Over those same games Konecny leads Philadelphia with eleven goals; Zegras follows with nine; Christian Dvorak has six; Carl Grundstrom has seven goals despite being scratched last game; Owen Tippett has added six.

Younger players are also expected to play key roles moving forward: “The Flyers need some of their young players such as Matvei Michkov, Emil Andrae and Denver Barkey to bring both energy and poise.” Specifically regarding Michkov: “The 21-year-old Russian played with energy and had seven shots on goal — six in the first two periods — on Wednesday in Utah over 12:11 of ice time. He ended his personal goal drought on Jan. 15 in Pittsburgh for his lone point in the past five games.”

On defense against Colorado’s top talent like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar: “The likes of Art Ross Trophy candidate Nathan MacKinnon and superstar defenseman Cale Makar don’t need much time or space to weave their magic…Duplicating [Anaheim’s] feat [of keeping them off scoresheet] is a very tall order.” The report notes that containing these stars will be crucial if Philadelphia hopes for success.
