The Philadelphia Flyers were defeated 6-3 by the New York Rangers in a Saturday afternoon game at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The loss extends the Flyers’ winless streak to six games, with their record now standing at 0-5-1 over that stretch.
New York took control early, scoring three goals on their first three shots after the Flyers had initially gone ahead 1-0. Travis Konecny opened the scoring for Philadelphia, but Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Brennan Othmann responded quickly for the Rangers, giving them a 3-1 lead.
In the second period, Zibanejad scored two more times—one on a power play—to complete his hat trick and widen New York’s advantage. Panarin also added his second goal of the game in this period. Trevor Zegras managed to cut into the deficit in the third period with his 19th goal of the season, but it was not enough for Philadelphia.
Flyers goaltender Aleksei Kolosov started but was replaced after allowing three goals on as many shots. Samuel Ersson came in and made 22 saves on 25 shots. Rangers goalie Spencer Martin stopped 27 of 30 shots faced.
During the first period, Rodrigo Abols left the ice with an apparent injury and did not return. The Flyers struggled to generate offense during their lone power play opportunity and allowed several shorthanded chances to New York.
Special teams were a factor; Philadelphia went scoreless on their only power play while killing off two of three penalties taken. The team’s structure and execution have been issues recently, with turnovers, missed coverages, and untimely penalties contributing to their current struggles.
Despite some promising play from young forwards Denver Barkey and Matvei Michkov in recent games, few positives emerged from this matchup for Philadelphia.
The Flyers continue their season as part of the National Hockey League. The organization has played home games at Wells Fargo Center since joining the league in its 1967 expansion and maintains its roster and community involvement through various initiatives (https://www.nhl.com/flyers/).
