The Philadelphia Flyers were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday. Special teams played a key role in the outcome, with the Flyers unable to capitalize on their power play opportunities and struggling on the penalty kill. The loss extends the Flyers’ winless streak to five games.
Justin Brazeau opened scoring for Pittsburgh early in the first period with a power play goal, followed by another power play goal from Bryan Rust. Egor Chinakhov added a third goal for Pittsburgh early in the second period before Rodrigo Abols scored for Philadelphia to make it 3-1. Noel Acciari restored a three-goal lead for Pittsburgh late in the second.
In the third period, Sidney Crosby and Connor Dewar each scored, extending Pittsburgh’s lead to 6-1. Nick Seeler and Matvei Michkov added goals for Philadelphia later in the period.
Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson was replaced after allowing three goals on 14 shots. Aleksei Kolosov stopped 13 of 16 shots in relief. Jeff Skinner made 30 saves on 33 shots for Pittsburgh.
Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet commented on team structure and special teams: “The Flyers 5-on-5 structure was OK in the first period but penalties hurt. So did losing 50/50 battles on the boards. On the penalty kill, the Flyers were caught over-pursuing.” He also noted, “Both ends of special teams have been a sore spot for the Flyers of late.”
Owen Tippett, who had recently found scoring success, recorded five shots but did not register a point against Pittsburgh.
The Philadelphia Flyers are a professional ice hockey team competing in the National Hockey League since joining during its expansion in 1967. The team plays home games at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and has won Stanley Cup championships according to their official website. The organization is also involved in community initiatives and maintains an active roster throughout each season.
Philadelphia’s next game will be an opportunity to address recent struggles as they continue their NHL campaign.
