The Philadelphia Flyers lost 5-1 to the Calgary Flames on New Year’s Eve at the Scotiabank Saddledome, ending a two-game season series with a sweep by Calgary. Five different players scored for the Flames, and the Flyers struggled to generate offense throughout the match.
Mikael Backlund opened scoring for Calgary in the first period. The Flyers were outmatched in high-danger scoring chances during that period, which ended with only four shots for Philadelphia compared to three for Calgary.
The second period saw more action but not in favor of the Flyers. Jonathan Huberdeau and Rasmus Andersson extended Calgary’s lead, sandwiching their goals around one from Travis Konecny. Later in the period, Yegor Sharangovich added another power play goal for Calgary, making it 4-1 by intermission.
In the third period, Connor Zary capitalized on a turnover behind the Flyers’ net to score Calgary’s fifth goal. Goaltender Samuel Ersson allowed five goals on 24 shots, while Dustin Wolf made 25 saves on 26 shots for Calgary.
Regarding special teams play, “The Flyers went 0-for-2 on the power play. On the penalty kill, the Flyers went 1-for-3 against Calgary’s 32nd-ranked power play. One, however, was a lengthy two-man advantage for the Flames.”
Head coach staff noted issues with energy management as this was Philadelphia’s third game in four nights: “Playing their third game in four nights, the Flyers were not sharp physically or mentally for much of the game.”
Matvei Michkov had limited impact after his previous strong performance: “Coming off arguably his best game of the season, Matvei Michkov was unable to carry positive momentum into Calgary. Overall, in 16:16 of ice time across 19 shifts, Michkov did not attempt a shot on net. He was credited with one takeaway.”
On goaltending challenges faced by Ersson: “The Flyers’ netminder was in a tough situation in this game. He was unable to come up with a couple of needed saves, but the game turned into an uphill climb for everyone in Orange & Black.”
The loss leaves Philadelphia continuing its season as part of its ongoing participation in professional ice hockey competition within the National Hockey League. The team plays home games at Wells Fargo Center and maintains community engagement through various initiatives according to its official website.
