The Philadelphia Flyers faced a difficult night in Hershey, Pennsylvania, losing 5-1 to the Washington Capitals during Thursday’s preseason matchup at the Giant Center. The Flyers initially held off the Capitals in the first period but were unable to maintain momentum as Washington pulled away over the final two periods.

Jacob Gaucher scored the only goal for Philadelphia late in the second period, narrowing what had been a 3-0 deficit. Rodrigo Abols and Adam Ginning assisted on Gaucher’s goal. Despite this effort, Washington regained control with two more goals in the third period.

Andrew Cristall opened scoring for Washington during a power play while Noah Juulsen was serving a penalty for kneeing. Dan Vladar started in goal for Philadelphia, playing the first period before Aleksei Kolosov took over for the remaining 40 minutes. Kolosov has now played 100 minutes across three preseason games.

Ivan Miroshnichenko and Sonny Milano extended Washington’s lead in the second period. The Flyers failed to capitalize on a lengthy 5-on-3 power play opportunity. In the third period, Conor McMichael scored shorthanded early on, further dampening any chance of a comeback by Philadelphia. Milano added his second goal late in regulation.

Philadelphia struggled on special teams, going 0-for-4 on power plays and conceding a shorthanded goal. They killed one of two penalties taken during the game.

Alex Bump and Jett Luchanko, who previously played together with Lehigh Valley Phantoms during last spring’s Calder Cup playoffs, were unable to generate much offense this time; Bump registered two shots on goal and Luchanko one. Russian winger Nikita Grebenkin also found it difficult to establish rhythm against Washington.

On defense, Cam York saw significant ice time in all situations but finished minus-two with two shots on goal. Egor Zamula made some strong defensive plays during one of Philadelphia’s penalty kills despite an overall tough night for Flyers’ blueliners including Noah Juulsen, Dennis Gilbert, and Helge Grans.

Vladar stopped eight of nine shots in his preseason debut with Philadelphia before Kolosov made 16 saves on 20 shots through two periods.

The Flyers’ starting lineup included Alex Bump, Noah Cates, Travis Konecny; Owen Tippett, Jett Luchanko, Nikita Grebenkin; Denver Barkey, Jack Nesbitt, Devin Kaplan; Nicolas Deslauriers, Jacob Gaucher, Rodrigo Abols up front. Defensive pairings featured Cam York–Helge Grans; Adam Ginning–Egor Zamula; Dennis Gilbert–Noah Juulsen.
