The Philadelphia Flyers earned a 3-2 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday. The victory marked the Flyers’ third consecutive win and kept them within five points of a wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference, though they remain behind the Boston Bruins, who have one game in hand.
Noah Cates contributed two points for Philadelphia, while goaltender Dan Vladar made 29 saves on 31 shots during regulation and overtime. Vladar also stopped two of three attempts in the shootout. Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras scored in the shootout to secure an extra point for the Flyers.
The first period saw Dakota Joshua score his seventh goal of the season for Toronto before Christian Dvorak tied it up with a power-play goal late in the frame. There was no scoring in the second period as both teams struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities.
In the third period, Cates gave Philadelphia a temporary lead with his 12th goal of the season. William Nylander equalized for Toronto on a power play with just over two minutes left, sending the game to overtime. After a scoreless extra session, Vladar’s performance helped Philadelphia clinch victory in the shootout.
Vladar faced 31 shots overall, while former Flyers goalie Anthony Stolarz made 23 saves on 25 shots for Toronto before allowing two goals during three shootout attempts.
Nick Seeler left the game due to injury and did not return for Philadelphia in the third period. Travis Konecny was unavailable due to an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day.
Special teams played a role as Philadelphia went one-for-three on power plays and killed off two out of three penalties against them. In faceoffs, Toronto won 59 percent but Philadelphia managed key draws late in regulation.
The Flyers continue their campaign as part of their ongoing participation as a professional ice hockey team competing in the National Hockey League. The organization is also involved in community outreach programs such as cancer awareness initiatives through league-wide efforts.
On December 11, 1977, defenseman Tom Bladon set an NHL record by becoming the first defenseman to record eight points in a single game when he helped lead Philadelphia to an 11-1 win over Cleveland Barons (official website).
