The Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp held its 11th annual event, offering participants an NHL-level experience while raising funds for the Flyers Alumni Association’s programs. These initiatives include Every Child Deserves a Bike, the 12 Day of Christmas giving spree, and new wellness and support programs such as medical concierge services and scholarships for alumni families.
The camp featured former Flyers players as coaches. Daniel Briere and Patrick Sharp led Team Toyota to the championship in the Fantasy Camp Cup, while John LeClair and Brad Marsh coached runner-up Team River Rock Academy. Other teams were guided by Keith Jones, Joe Watson, Bill Clement, and Mark Recchi.
Training staff including Dave “Sudsy” Settlemyre, Jim “Turk” Evers, Dave “Culpy” Cup, Joe Rivera, and Rob Pomroy managed equipment and player well-being. Attendees received an extensive tour of the Flyers Training Center complex. On Saturday night after tournament games, a BBQ dinner was held at the facility’s new third rink area. Sharp and Briere led a detailed tour that included locker rooms, press areas, workout rooms typically off-limits even to staff and media, coaching offices such as head coach Rick Tocchet’s office, executive meeting spaces including those used by General Manager Daniel Briere and President of Hockey Operations Keith Jones.
Briere provided insight into his daily responsibilities as general manager. He described interactions with assistant general managers Brent Flahr (amateur prospects), Alyn McCauley (pro-level prospects), Barry Hanrahan (CBA compliance), as well as management support staff.
Campers saw firsthand how operations have evolved over different decades of team history. Alumni noted significant improvements in facilities compared to previous eras but said core values remain unchanged: “The sweat, the blood and the laughter are the same. Everything else is different.”
This year’s camp introduced retro uniforms based on historic American Hockey League farm teams affiliated with the Flyers. Teams wore jerseys modeled after clubs such as the Quebec Aces (Team New Balance), Richmond Robins (Team PSS Group), Maine Mariners (Team River Rock Academy), and Philadelphia Phantoms (Team Toyota).
A longstanding tradition continued with a surprise dinner location revealed only at camp time—this year it was held at Philadelphia’s 23rd St. Armory in Center City. The venue has historical significance dating back to 1774.
During this visit attendees toured artifacts with guide Matteo before gathering for dinner in a non-commissioned officers lounge reserved for alumni supporters Dan Maggiani and Steve Capoferri. Afterward Lou Nolan introduced each team roster in an opening-night style ceremony.
At camp’s conclusion several unofficial awards were given out:
– Devon Richio earned the Bobby Clarke Award as tournament MVP.
– Phil Brady and Conor McElwain received top goaltender honors.
– Brian George won recognition for leadership despite playing through injury.
– Family participation awards went to several groups including father-son duos.
– Jenny Koltenback joined Heather Meister to become first female teammates at Fantasy Camp.
– Phil Foster was named best defenseman; Lupo Dion recognized for sportsmanship; Ben Yuter identified as rising star; Ian Wessels received fan club recognition.
The event continues to serve both fundraising purposes for community outreach programs supported by alumni activities while providing fans unique access behind-the-scenes at team facilities.
