Flyers co-founder and longtime chairman Ed Snider passed away at age 83 on April 11, 2016. His legacy continues to impact the community through various initiatives.
One of Snider’s most cherished projects is the Ed Snider Youth Hockey and Education program, founded in 2006. It aims to provide young people with access to hockey while preparing them for success in life academically and socially. “This is how I want people to remember me . . . this is what I want to be my legacy. What we’re doing for kids. I’m more proud of this than anything else I’ve done in my life,” Snider expressed.
The program has achieved notable results, with a high school graduation rate of 99% among its participants, compared to Philadelphia’s overall rate of 75%. Additionally, 75% of Snider graduates enroll in postsecondary education programs, significantly higher than the city’s average of 48%.
Another aspect of his legacy is The Snider Foundation, which supports causes important to him. A notable beneficiary is the Flyers Alumni Association, which receives operational support from the foundation. Brad Marsh, president of the Flyers Alumni Association, stated, “Mr. Snider brought so much to our lives and careers in Philadelphia. Our way of saying thank you is by giving back in return and striving to follow the example he set.”
Flyers Charities also plays a role in continuing Snider’s vision by managing initiatives like the annual Carnival and other community-focused programs. These efforts aim to eliminate financial barriers and aid local families affected by cancer throughout Greater Philadelphia.
The Flyers Alumni work closely with programs such as Flyers Warriors (veterans), Flyers PowerPlay (power wheelchair hockey), and Flyers Special Hockey (special needs youth) under the umbrella of Flyers Charities.
