Flyers Alumni defenseman Ed “Boxcar” Hospodar appeared as a guest on the “Flyers Daily” podcast with host Jason Myrtetus, discussing his experiences both in hockey and life after his playing career. Known for his physical style during his time on the ice, Hospodar has since become involved in youth hockey coaching and officiating.

During the conversation, Hospodar shared insights into dealing with chronic pain that resulted from years of professional and recreational hockey. He explained how he once believed enduring pain was simply part of an athlete’s life but later discovered alternative approaches to managing it.

Hospodar described becoming an advocate for combination therapies aimed at injury recovery and reducing inflammation. He specifically highlighted hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as beneficial in addressing long-term pain issues. Hospodar recounted struggling with severe neck pain that made simple conversations difficult until he tried HBOT.

Initially skeptical but open-minded about HBOT, Hospodar said, “Getting the oxygen in your system can’t hurt.” He added, “It’s very cool, a high-tech piece of machinery… It isn’t punishment. It’s a very pleasant thing. When you go into the chamber, you can listen to music, watch TV.”

He further noted that while the process is enjoyable and relaxing, its primary benefit is therapeutic: “It’s just another tool in helping your body to heal,” he said.

Nexgen Hyperbaric, which partners with both the Flyers and the Eagles, was mentioned as bringing HBOT technology from hospitals to specialized clinics since its founding in 2004. The company uses emerging scientific data on HBOT for sports medicine applications and beyond.

Research suggests that HBOT may also have applications in neurological medicine by enhancing oxygen delivery to tissues and supporting brain cell regeneration.

The Philadelphia Flyers are a professional ice hockey team competing in the National Hockey League since their establishment during the 1967 expansion. The organization plays its home games at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and participates actively in community initiatives as well as league-wide efforts such as cancer awareness campaigns. More information about their activities can be found on their official website.
