The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft with eight selections and a strategy that extends beyond just the first round, according to comments from Executive Vice President and General Manager Howie Roseman on April 22.
The draft is seen as a critical period for building a deep and sustainable roster. While Round 1 attracts the most attention, Roseman said the focus remains on maximizing value across all rounds. “You look at it like you have a chance to add to your roster, to continue to add to the core and bring on board as much depth and talent as possible,” Roseman said. “We’re excited with that. Everyone here puts in a full year of work on this, so this weekend is when it all comes to fruition.”
Roseman emphasized that each pick is an asset that could be used in various ways, including trading up or down or acquiring veteran players. He noted past successes in finding valuable contributors in later rounds, such as Moro Ojomo (seventh round), Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (fifth round), Jalyx Hunt (third round), and Cooper DeJean (second round). “Every player you add to the roster is valuable. Every player is given a chance to be the best version of himself and help this football team,” he said.
The Eagles’ approach relies heavily on their college scouting department, which spends nearly eleven months evaluating talent before making decisions during draft weekend. Roseman explained their method: “I feel like the draft is its own entity… When you talk about best players available, it’s hard to stack guys… But you do it based on tiers.” He added that filling perceived needs should not come at the expense of passing over more talented players within those tiers.
Founded in 1933, the Eagles operate as a professional American football team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania according to their official website. The team has built a broad national following through games, media coverage, merchandise sales according to their official website, and by providing professional football games along with news updates and fan engagement opportunities according to their official website.
Looking ahead at this year’s draft weekend, Roseman concluded: “I think we go into this draft being very comfortable with having 23 guys we’re ready to take… If there’s an opportunity that we think makes sense… we’ll move up… If we have multiple guys at our spot and there’s a trade that makes sense… we’ll move back.”
