The Philadelphia Eagles used their second preseason game of 2025 to evaluate the depth of their quarterback roster. Head Coach Nick Sirianni chose to rest both starting quarterback Jalen Hurts and backup Tanner McKee, giving Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) and Kyle McCord full game action against the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles lost 22-13 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Jalen Hurts remains the established starter for the team, coming off a Super Bowl MVP performance and holding a 37-10 regular-season record since 2022. The organization views him as a key leader, especially in postseason play.
Tanner McKee has developed steadily since being drafted in the sixth round in 2022. Despite working with three offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches in as many seasons, McKee’s strong performances—including his recent preseason opener showing—have reinforced the team’s confidence in him. His rest during the Browns game was described as unusual for a No. 2 quarterback and highlights his value to the Eagles.
The third-string quarterback role is still undecided, with both DTR and McCord expected to see playing time in the upcoming preseason finale against the New York Jets. In Saturday’s matchup, McCord converted a defensive turnover into a touchdown pass to Ainias Smith but also faced challenges. DTR threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. The coaching staff plans to continue evaluating both players over the next week.
Building depth at quarterback remains a priority for Philadelphia, who will continue working with Thompson-Robinson and McCord leading up to final roster decisions.
Head Coach Nick Sirianni praised safety Andrew Mukuba after he scored on a 75-yard interception return and recovered a fumble that set up another score. “The ball finds him,” said Sirianni of Mukuba, who made his first pick-six at any level during this game.
Other rookies made notable contributions: Jihaad Campbell recorded a sack on Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel; Azeez Ojulari also notched a sack; Ty Robinson continued to show promise as an interior lineman; Brett Toth started at left guard while Drew Kendall played multiple positions along the line; Smael Mondon Jr., linebacker, showed improvement; receiver Ainias Smith made several plays; and cornerback Jakorian Bennett was active in coverage.
The coaching staff will review game tape before making further personnel decisions ahead of their final preseason contest.
