The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Apr. 27 that they have exercised the fifth-year options for defensive players Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith, keeping both under contract through the 2027 season.

This move is significant as both Carter and Smith have played key roles in the team’s recent success, including their contributions to the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory. The organization’s decision ties two pillars of their defensive line to Philadelphia for at least two more years.

Jalen Carter, a defensive tackle selected ninth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has made an immediate impact since joining the team. He is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was named All-Pro in 2024. “I have the mindset that nobody can outdo me,” Carter said. Former Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury described him as “one of the most dominant players in the league, if not the most dominant that I’ve seen.” Eagles Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio added, “He disrupts the game, he’s smart, and he plays hard. There aren’t many like him out there and I’m glad he’s on our side.” In his rookie year, Carter recorded six quarterback sacks—the most by an Eagles rookie since Derrick Burgess in 2001—and helped lead a defense that topped league rankings.

Nolan Smith was drafted with the thirtieth pick in 2023 and has also distinguished himself early in his career. He holds a franchise record for most sacks during a single postseason with four during their championship run. Head Coach Nick Sirianni said of Smith: “He is just a nasty, violent football player… He’s heavy-handed. Big-time hitter. Man, he is so tough.” Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay praised Smith’s dedication: “His intangibles and his want to be great is just unbelievable and it shows in how he helps out the young guys.”

The Eagles operate as a professional American football team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania according to their official website. The team joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1933 according to their official website.

Beyond sports performance on field, the official website reports that they exert cultural influence by attracting fans from across Philadelphia and nationwide through games, media content, merchandise sales, news updates, ticketing services and other forms of fan engagement.
