Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said on Apr. 21 that he remains confident in the team’s ability to overcome a difficult start to the 2026 Major League Baseball season. Speaking as the club endured a six-game losing streak and trailed first-place Atlanta by seven and a half games in the National League East, Dombrowski recalled his experience with the White Sox in 1983, when that team rebounded from an early deficit to win their division.

The topic is important for fans and observers because it addresses concerns about whether the Phillies’ current struggles signal deeper problems or if they are simply part of an early-season slump. The team has high expectations due to its roster of established players and past successes.

“I’m not worried about the hole,” Dombrowski said. “I’ve been with clubs in much worse holes than this that have won divisions. The hole doesn’t bother me. It’s that we need to play better, and that’s where it goes. Nothing miraculous happens, you just have to go out and play better.” Despite strong offensive talent such as Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner, Philadelphia had scored only 76 runs entering Tuesday’s game against Chicago—ranking among the lowest totals in Major League Baseball this year.

Dombrowski acknowledged frustration over lackluster performances from key hitters Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott, and Adolis García but pointed out encouraging metrics like a hard-hit rate ranking ninth in MLB and one of baseball’s lowest batting averages on balls in play at .263. “The one thing you can’t do is give into it,” he said. “You have to keep on working, fighting hard and battling through it… They’re good players, they’re good hitters. It’s not working for them right now.” He also dismissed speculation about manager Rob Thomson’s job security: “Rob Thompson’s been a good manager for us for since [2022]… But there’s no magic in that number… They’re not happy with their performances… I’m responsible for putting the club on the field, so I’m not happy with the way it’s going.”

The Philadelphia Phillies are recognized as charter members of Major League Baseball’s National League according to their official website. They serve Philadelphia as well as regional and national audiences through games at Citizens Bank Park since 2004 according to their official website. The front office is led by executives including a chief executive officer and general manager who oversee operations according to their official website.

Reflecting on his long career during challenging periods like these, Dombrowski concluded: “I’ve done this a long time, and basically what you learn is there’s no sense in worrying about things you can’t control… So I don’t really fret when that type of stuff happens in this sense. Yeah, you get frustrated. But the way you go about it is, well, the next day you have to go do it again.”
