Juniors Marty Coyne and Nick Spaventa were named the Ivy League’s Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, according to an April 6 announcement from the conference office.
These recognitions highlight individual achievements within Penn Quakers Men’s Baseball, which competes in NCAA Division I athletics as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s intercollegiate program, according to the official website. The team is a member of the Ivy League and plays its home games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
Coyne has been one of Penn’s main starting pitchers this season but made a notable relief appearance on Saturday against Columbia. He threw 6.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit during that stretch, retiring 19 of Columbia’s final 20 batters in Game 2. Coyne also recorded four strikeouts with no walks over his 69 pitches. He currently holds the second-best earned run average (ERA) in the Ivy League at 2.55 and limits opposing hitters to a .203 batting average, ranking fourth in the league.
Spaventa contributed significantly on offense throughout Penn’s four games last week. In their win over Delaware State, he had two hits and three runs batted in (RBIs). During a three-game series with Columbia, Spaventa hit a home run in each game, finishing with four hits, five RBIs, and five runs scored overall. He leads all players in the conference with six home runs so far this season.
The Red and Blue will return to Liberty Bell Classic play on Tuesday against Lafayette before hosting Cornell for three games over the weekend.
