Bradley Carnell, head coach of the Philadelphia Union, has been named MLSSoccer.com’s Coach of the Matchday for the third time in 2025. The recognition follows the team’s recent win over FC Cincinnati, which secured a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
The Union claimed a 1-0 victory on the road against FC Cincinnati, marking their first league win at that venue since 2021. This result confirmed their seventh postseason appearance in eight years.
Carnell’s approach remained consistent throughout the match, even as challenges increased when the team was reduced to ten players at the hour mark. “Carnell continued to stick to his principles and playing style regardless of where the game took place with the Boys in Blue displaying remarkable poise after taking the lead,” according to an official statement. Strategic substitutions were made, including bringing on Frankie Westfield and Indiana Vassilev for Quinn Sullivan and Tai Baribo to strengthen defensive efforts.
As pressure from FC Cincinnati intensified, Carnell introduced additional changes at the top of his preferred formation. “As the homeside continued to attack, Carnell sent on fresh legs for the top of the 4-2-2-2 formation to keep the club’s pressing tactics as a strength and not just bunker down for a long stretch of volleys into the box.”
With this away win, Philadelphia Union maintains its lead in both Eastern Conference standings and Supporters’ Shield race. Other contenders include San Diego (56 points), FC Cincinnati (52 points), Minnesota United (51 points), and Inter Miami CF—who are currently eleven points behind with four games in hand.
Eight Union players will join their national teams during the upcoming FIFA International Break before returning for their longest road trip of the season. The next fixture is set against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, September 13 at 9:30PM ET on MLS Season Pass.
